Turning Code and Industry-Standard Findings into Defensible Expert Opinions

Technical insight from HUB Engineering.

By HUB Engineering

Codes and industry standards can sharpen an engineering opinion, but a citation alone does not establish breach, causation, or the significance of a condition. The analysis must show why the provision applies and how the observed facts relate to it.

A reliable framework

Identify the jurisdiction, edition, effective date, occupancy, construction or alteration history, and scope of each provision. Explain whether the source is mandatory, advisory, or evidence of customary practice. Then compare the documented condition with the specific language and limitations.

Make the reasoning transparent

State the facts relied upon, measurements and methods used, assumptions, alternative interpretations, and material limitations. Address causation separately: a deviation may be relevant without proving that it produced the event.

A litigation-ready opinion is understandable to a non-engineer, technically reproducible, and appropriately limited to what the evidence supports.
